The Unified Taekwon-Do Association (UTA) on behalf of England-ITF was proud to host the Master Class Seminar on 6th September 2009 at Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre. Over 220 instructors and students attended the seminar including students from Belgium, Ireland and Germany.

The seminar began at 9.00am with the Chairman of the UTA and England ITF starting with a warm up, a practice photo session and some basic techniques. Around 10.30am, Mr Horan got the word that Grand Master Choi had arrived and left the hall to greet him. The hall was silent; you could feel the anticipation from the students most of whom were meeting the Grand Master for the very first time. We stood and applauded Grand Master Choi as he walked through the centre line and you could see the look of awe on the student's faces. He started off with a speech about Taekwon-Do, introduced the Masters and ITF officer Mr Mark Skyrme that assisted him, which also included Grand Master Lee Won Il from Spain. Once he had finished we were ready for our photo session.

Following the photo session Grand Master Choi left to get change and Mr Horan continued with a few more techniques. When Grand Master Choi returned the seminar was well and truly underway. The topic of the day's seminar was to be Power and how we can apply power in to our Taekwon-Do technique by utilising the body to its maximum potential. The rest of the morning was spent on Chon Ji and the first movement being the lower outer forearm block. Master Wheatley told the students that originally students would spend 3 months perfecting this one technique. We then applied the same technique and power to the pads.m The morning session was soon over and it was time to break before lunch, but just before we broke for lunch Grand Master Choi made a presentation to Grand Master Lee Won Il with an official ITF recognition of his 9th Degree Black Belt.

After lunch Master Wheatley continued with his passion for power. We moved from Chon Ji to Dan Gun and Do San working on techniques and again maximising the potential of the body to unleash devastating power. When Grandmaster Choi rejoined the seminar and we moved on to Won Hyo, a small group of coloured belts performed in front of the group followed by a small group of Black belts as Master Wheatley and Grand Master Choi broke down each technique. We continued with Won Hyo a few more times before moving back on to bag work with the knee in which one person had to be sat down on the floor to ensure that you lift your leg up high enough to hit the pad. This followed turning kicks on the pads again utilising the momentum of the hips and body for explosive power.

Before you knew the seminar had come to an end. The students looked tired from a long day, but they also looked inspired by what they had learnt today, and couldn't wait for their next Taekwon-Do lesson to enable them to apply what they had learnt on the day. After the seminar a group of students remained in the area, warming up, practicing their patterns, preparing for their grading under Master Wheatley, Master Nicholls and Master Hogan. All of the students that took the grading from 7th degree to 4th degree passed after 3 hours of patterns, sparring, self-defence and breaking. Mr Deedigan who took his 7th degree performed all patterns from Tong-Il down, and was asked to perform all aspects of Taekwon-Do. Truly inspirational to see that his 7th degree was well deserved, so becoming a Master.

In the evening, several members of the England ITF and our overseas guests, along with Grand Master Choi met up at the local Chinese for a meal. At the end of a delicious meal Grand Master Choi sat with each of his guests for pictures before making his exit back to his hotel.

Master Choi never fails to impress. The son of General ChoiHong Hi, the founder of Taekwon-Do, Master Choi is now the president, leader and guardian of modern day ITF Taekwon-Do. I use the word guardian intently. His work over the last number of years has been to bring ITF Taekwon-Do into it's rightful place in the world, as a martial art and a system of self defence. When Taekwon-Do was initially developed by General Choi back in the late 1940's and the early 1950's. It's purpose was to enable the practitioner to develop raw power from the training methods involved. It was, undoubtedly a full contact system. Over the years, and as Taekwon-Do became a worth while business concept, training methods changed to become a more family orientated, and child centred martial art.

The training methods of old would have slowed Taekwon-Do from developing as a uniquely popular family martial art. It would have been the staple diet of genuinely hard men and head cases, such was the training methods. It can be said that over the many years, Taekwon-Do has become a some what watered down version of it's original mould. It has inevitably become a system of sport and an art based on aesthetics rather than any sense of realism. This now seems to be the target of change of the ITF and in particular, Master Choi Jung Hwa, who wants to see Taekwon-Do become a more realistic system of fighting. He wants to see an end to the pretty and 'dance' based tul. An over emphasis on prettiness has over shadowed Taekwon-Do's true nature.

This latest master class was all about power and the use of kicks and strikes to create the utmost damage to any opponent. Prettiness in performance was not an issue, in fact master Choi, as he always does, insists that to perform any Taekwon-Do strike or block with full power will of course pull the practitioner off balance, and this is ok. It means that in the first instance, power is to the fore. Training over and over will bring balance, inevitably.

To quote master Choi's own saying - "once you know one thing through and through, then you know it for everything" - this was the under current for the master class. There was repetitious training of single strikes and techniques until the concept was fully understood. Taekwon-Do is going back to it's roots. It's true identity is being revealed once again. When you look at the many pioneers of Taekwon-Do, to name a very few, GM Nam Tae Hi, GM Rhee Ki Ha, Master Han Cha Kyo, GM CK Choi, GM JC Kim, all of these in their hay day, and some even now are power houses. Their training was real, it was gruelling and it was all about blunt force trauma. When you look at the instructors that came out of these pioneers, and from our own point of view here in Ireland, Mr Aidan Walsh and Master Robert Howard (two of five) who were original students who came under GM Rhee were all about impact development. Even when I was training as a kid, Master Trevor Nicholls was all about raw power, and the destruction of the opponent. His destruction of six Irish boards with a lead leg side kick in Aughrim street sports centre, circa1992 is etched in my memory.

Many things in life come full circle, and these days I find myself training with and under one of those Irish pioneers, Aidan Walsh, who was instrumental along with others, Robert Howard, Liam Dandy, Frank Mathews, Brendan Roche and Tony Phelan in spreading Taekwon-Do around the Island of Ireland. I shouldn't be surprised then to find that Mr Walsh's primary concern in training is to learn how to hit hard, and be scientific it your delivery. This master class was also a poignant one, after 30 odd years master Choi met with Mr Walsh for a trip down memory lane. In 1974, Mr Walsh was part of a demo team along with master Choi who performed a Taekwon-Do demonstration for General Choi on the back of a truck in Winnipeg, Canada.

The two had a good old laugh as they recalled good times in Canada and at the residence of the General. The two Taekwon-Do stalwarts embraced each other. As someone who has only dipped his toe in the vast ocean of Taekwon-Do life, I found it was quite an historical moment. I think all of us who travelled to England to train under master Choi share Mr Walsh's opinion. Master Choi is genuine, and is not afraid to show the courage of his convictions. During lunch with master Choi, he outlined his vision for Taekwon-Do in the near future. With South Korea now accepting him and the ITF with open arms, the ITF and Taekwon-Do in general is quit rightly slotting back into it's rightful place, acknowledged and understood as being a complete martial art, now with all it's priorities in the right place. Power is key!

Thank you to all those involved in the UTA and England ITF for the kind invitation to the Master Class, Master Trevor Nicholls and Mr Glenn Horan - Thank you. Elite Taekwon-Do Academy Ireland ITF

This was to be the second International Instructors course with Master Choi in Cork and the excitement was palpable. Organized by Mrs. Patricia Dalton to an incredible degree of finesse from an exceptionally fine hotel at a very reasonable cost to a wonderful banquet and probably three of the most exciting days we have ever spent. As soon as Master Choi entered the room you could feel his presence and the excitement building. One of the first things we learned was to pay our respects to the founder General Choi Hong Hi, his father, and the founder of Taekwon-Do : we did this by the simple act of performing a silent bow.

He is without a doubt one of the most humble men I have ever met and yet he is someone of incredible stature and import!!ance. For me he is the living embodiment of what it means to be a true martial artist. There is no-one on this planet who has more knowledge on the art of Taekwon-Do. His ability to produce power and grace from nothing is a constant source of amazement.

President Choi`s use of humour and stories of his childhood served to put us at our ease. He was assisted by ITF Ireland President, Master Dalton, as well as numerous international masters. They walked among us making corrections and giving assistance in a relaxed and friendly manner. Prior to any physical training President Choi talked about the real meaning of "Do" in Taekwon-Do - the moral code. This is a subject very close to Master Choi's heart. He stressed that as students of Taekwon-Do we must strive to be good human beings, and question every action we carry out, ensuring that we are always selfless, caring and above all honest with ourselves.

Honesty he pointed out, is one the most important traits any human being can have. Through honesty, comes integrity. As instructors, he mentioned that above all we must strive to be honest with our students, remembering that some so-called Taekwon-Do instructors are only interested in ripping off their students and running Taekwon-business as opposes to Taekwon-Do, these people have no place in our family. The physical training kicked off and by 9.30pm we had covered both exercises Saju Magki and Saju Jirugi, as well as Chon Ji, Dan Gun, Do san and touching on Won Hyo. Soon it was 9.30 and we had run over time without realising it because we were so absorbed in what we were doing - we were having too much fun.

Day two started at 10am with a warm-up conducted by Master Harry, who is always smiling and clearly loves what he does. Master Choi again talked about the Do, and how easy it is to practice TaeKwon but how difficult it is to practice TaeKwon-Do. He told us we must try to bring the Do into our everyday lives and become true Martial Artists. He told us he found it difficult himself because of his humanity and his human failings but he tried to start each day and do his best to observe the tenets of TaeKwon-Do. We completed Tul Won Hyo to Toi Gye and did work on the turning kick.

The attention to detail and finesse was incredible. Again we finished a little over time because we were all so focused on what we were learning and enjoying the experience. Later that evening we attended a banquet and celebrated the 42nd anniversary of the I.T.F. - we even had a birthday cake complete with candles. Master Nicholls arrived and spoke to us about the import!!ance of the etiquette, apologising for his lateness due to flight delays and again he praised Mr and Mrs Dalton for their excellent and considerable work in organising the I.I.C. Several presentations were made to all the visiting Masters and Master Choi was presented with a beautiful hand crafted vase.

He expressed his happiness that TaeKwon-Do was one of the fastest growing and most popular Martial Arts and how he felt at last we were fulfilling his father's wishes by spreading the Art throughout the world. We all sang Happy Birthday to the I.T.F. and Master Choi blew out the candles on the cake which was ceremonially cut by Master Choi, Master Nicholls, Master Wheatley and Mrs. and Master Dalton. The evening ended on a high note with the presentation of the I.U.T.F. competitor of the year awards, with Eimear Curran getting junior competitor of the year, Ms. Moira Mc Elligot taking senior female competitor and Mr Fitzgibbon taking senior male for the second year running.

Day three started at 10am and we got straight into it (after Master Choi introduced Master Lee Won Il, one of the pioneering ITF Masters who is featured through out the Ho Sin Sul section of the 1972 encyclopedia. We then continued with Toi Gye and moving on to the three first degree Tul. We completed all three covering all the minutiae - chambering, trajectory, development of power, sine wave. Master Choi stressed that Tul should be elegant and beautiful as well as powerful and precise. They should look nice, have grace and nice lines, and that by combining power and technique with elegance and grace we can achieve this. We worked on the back kick in some detail, with the point being made that if you turn the body too much it becomes a back side kick and not a back kick. All of a sudden it was all over and Master Choi commented that felt so welcome that he didn't want to leave.

He seemed genuinely sad to have to finish up and said he was having too much fun - I think we all were. Then Master Lee Won Il addressed us in Korean, which Master Choi translated for us, and delivered a rousing and touching speech. He said how watching us made him want to go get his Dobok and join in. He brought many people close to tears with his deep praise for President Choi and left us all feeling renewed. The whole weekend left us all feeling a regenerated love of what it is we do and teach, a new sense of purpose and enthusiasm for the Art and a desire to be better not just at Taekwon-do but to be better people all round.

Master Choi and Master Lee Won Il posed for photos with each group and finally departed the dojang leaving us with a sense of loss and a desire to do it all again at the next available chance. The next day I learned that President Choi had promoted our President Mr. Dalton to Master. He referred to him as the Jewel in the I.T.F. crown. There is no harder working or more deserving person - Congratulations Sir - we are all very proud of you.
